Nippon America: Work and Play

-{The first in a series of posts about American and Japanese cultures}-


I ran across this video the other day and passed it on to some coworkers and it spread across the company like wild fire.

I think we love this video because it’s so hard to reconcile with our Japanese employers, both dealing with them here and the constant tug of war with our corporate headquarters in Osaka. Most of my exposure with Japanese culture has come from anime, which is not so much representative of Japanese culture as it is what Japanese entertainment tastes. And knowing what I know, things like Human Tetris make a lot of sense. There is a huge market for over-the-top wackiness. I guess not despite the usual uprightness and formality of their culture, but perhaps because of it. We have our culture war and they have theirs.
