Linkluster Folsom Prison Blues

Liars, all of them. Money does by happiness. Derek Thompson has six nuggets from happiness research. Emily Esfahani Smith explains that the pursuit of happiness thwarts happiness.

The land of foreclosures has opened up a market for single-family rentals. I consider this to be an unmitigated good. While home ownership has its social advantages, home rental has both economic and environmental benefits. Besides, do you know how hard it is to find a rental in rural Arapaho?

People with low self-esteem rush to the defense of damaged brands. That might explain my continued - albeit waning - affiliation with the Republican Party.

I haven’t been a parent long, but it’s given me a much better appreciation for breadwinner/homemaker households. I barely know how double-income households do it. It may be a while before I can re-enter the workforce.

Andy Hinds tried to keep princesses away from his daughters
, but they found’em, anyway. I don’t know that I care nearly as much as Hinds on princesses in particular, but trying to wade through what I would consider to be the balance between Wonder Woman and Cinderella is something I haven’t figured out (and ultimately won’t be our call anyway).

TVs that spy on us could revolutionize the industry. Okay, yeah, a little creepy. By my smartphone knows when I am looking at it and keeps the screen on, so I at least am being conditioned.

China’s one-child generation is growing up differently in, when you think about it, not unexpected ways. Biological or adopted, I hope that Lain gets a sibling.

Doctors have developed a 3D camera that’s the size of a pill. It’s supposed to help diagnose cancer.

Jordan Weissman explains that a bigger threat to relationships than the Internet is education disparity.

Google funded a survey on piracy. Here are the results.

Cable companies have admitted that data caps are not about congestion. What’s interesting to me that Comcast, one of the two leaders, really was worried about congestion or carriage costs. They weren’t trying to upsell, they were threatening to cut you off.

I’m with TechCrunch here. The HAPIfork seems neat and could be useful.

ArsTechnica explains why Ultra-HD won’t be the next big thing any time soon. For the longest time, I was a big “monitor resolution guy”… but honestly, since getting HD, I don’t really know what more I could want.

  1. I barely know how double-income households do it.

Me neither - there is no way we could make things function if my wife worked outside the home.

  2. It was good that the article on sex differentials among bachelors degree holders looked at people under 35, but I would also like to see a breakout by race. I suspect the imbalance is greater among NAMs, and that this skews the stats.

  3. From the article on Chinese only-children:

They grew up to be less trusting, more risk-averse, less competitive, more pessimistic, less conscientious, and it appeared, more neurotic.

Some fo these were unexpected, if only because they don’t go together. Less risky and less conscientious? I guess I don’t know much about only-children.

I bet it does, though that doesn’t render it irrelevant. There are also differences, I’d wager, within the white population. Among my cohort, a greater percentage of women I know are without degrees than men. If the statistics for whites as a whole are uneven, that means that within other groups the opposite is true. (I’d be willing to bet that whites women are also more likely to have degrees, though to a lesser extent to the population as a whole.

The “less risky” and “less conscientious” both ring true for me. The risk-aversion being passed on from their parents who have a lot invested in the only child, and less conscientious by virtue of not having to share space with a sibling.

Admittedly, there’s a part of me that wonders if the same REITs that have seen some of their lesser mall holdings turn into mush are now turning to residential real estate because it’s cheap and an excellent alternative given their current legal structures.

I’m not going to bother with HD as long as DirectTV feels the need to charge extra for the boxes. It’s just not worth it to spend more money for slightly better looking television.

I suspect that the only market for 4K television here may be the home theatre geeks. Hell, even Blu-Ray isn’t that popular, and a lot of people a streaming stuff off Netflix now, especially since Blockbuster has disappeared by default, and it’s de facto replacement, Redbox, is rather limited.

That’s quite possible. I wonder if, from a legal standpoint, there is less red tape or more red tape on property rentals in comparison with commercial rentals.

DirecTV charges extra for HD? I’m with the other guys, though I will be stopping service soon and when I pick it back up I will be considering DTV. This’d make it less likely I’d go that route.
