Should Analtech Change Its Name?

The company wants to know:

We at Analtech get a wide variety of questions, everything from “How do you produce such quality Thin Layer Chromatography plates at such reasonable prices?” to “How many of your products were used on ‘CSI’?”

But, the one question we get consistently is:

“Where on earth did you come up with a name like ‘Analtech’?!”

In fact, this question seems to be asked frequently to no one in particular on various web sites and blogs, normally phrased “Why did they name their company that?!”

As Mr. Hill points out, score one for Beavis and Butthead. If they’d seen the B&B world coming, they would have gone with Anatech, but that’s taken now. Beaver College famously changed its name several years back. Heck, an elementary school where I grew up changed their mascots from the Beavers to the Falcons because of the jokes.

So what’s next? The Annals of Internal Medicine? On the one hand, they have the extra N. On the other hand… huheh… annals… internal… huheh.

  1. The final nail in the coffin for Beaver College was webfiltering software.

And yes, in high school a popular pastime was going to the college fair and goofing on the people at the Beaver College table…

  2. I snicker when I hear any references to the Universal Technical Institute. Being married to a doctor, most of the time I hear UTI, it’s in reference to something else.

  3. Rumor has it that a last-minute realization about acronyms saved the founders of Houston Technological College from naming it Sam Houston Institute of Technology.

  4. They still have Beavers at Oregon State! Plus, isn’t a beaver the mascot of MIT? (nature’s engineer)?

At least the folks at Analtech have a sense of humor about it.

  6. On The Simpsons, Apu attended the Springfield Heights Institute of Technology.

I’m sure there is a reason why the school is Lubbock is called Texas Tech University, rather than the Texas Institute of Technology.
