12th Grade: Social Studies!

My day was salvaged when the call-out clerk found a $7 day for me at Redstone High. Even better, it was teaching American government! A subject on which I am both highly interested and knowledgeable about!

Of course, that makes it all the more frustrating when the students couldn’t care less. They didn’t even flinch when - by way of example - I mentioned the Detroit was closing half of its schools.

There was, however, one kid who seemed very interested in what I had to say. He watched me very intently.

He kept it up even after I gave everyone their reading assignment. Just watching.

Turns out he’s mentally handicapped.

  1. Knowledgeable about American government? Will, you give yourself far too much credit… Tee hee!

  2. High school seniors in their last semester aren’t likely to get too excited about any subjects. Most of them are just counting down the days until graduation.

  4. Kevin, once upon a time (before the most recent elections), I could actually name over 95 senators and tell you a thing or two about most of them. I’m slipping a bit, though.

  5. Peter, that’s a pretty good point. I doubt I was paying attention by that point, either.

  6. Sheila, at least this one didn’t punch another kid in the nose, as happened my first day (over lunch, I wasn’t there) with a developmentally delayed kid.

I’m not sure if it makes it more aggravating or less, but I think funding, rather than ideology, is behind it in the case of Redstone.

  7. You only got paid $7 for a day of teaching? Seriously?

  8. A “$7 Day” is a half-day. I make a little under $7 after taxes and gas for a half-day, a little under $30 for a full day.

Hey, don’t feel bad, it’s something. I recently put in for a telecommuting part-time job at ridiculous cut rates, just to have a little bit of my own money coming in.
